To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the others, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
As I read a good amount of the reviews I’ve noticed that most of them are given a score due to people’s political stands on the movie. Personally I watched this movie and with all of the political garbage aside I feel this movie had a very underwhelming execution. I like the idea showing how the purge started and the backstory but when it came to its overly dramatic action sequences the realism went to a zero. The movie feels very predictable and has moments that make the viewer rip their hair out due to the stereotypical “horror movie’s dumb choices.” This movie then feels even more unrealistic-even for a purge movie- when just one drug dealer takes down a supposedly “professional task force” filled with elite ex-military members. This caused a lot of those “Yeah right” and “like that’s going to happen” moments. Then to top it off (slight spoiler alert) when the main character shoots a electronic style explosive and the device actually explodes, with no damage to the building. If the movie would have focused more on creating a good plot and put more time into developing a quality film instead of a political message, this movie could have been good. But you can’t help but be forced to watch all the obvious and subliminal political messages and thus causing a very biased movie.
Fun to watch
The movie offers a good explanation into why and how they started the purge. Acting wasn’t the best and action was a bit unbelievable but over all a good addition to the franchise. While some may point to what they deem political, it’s a movie and they needed to create a backdrop to what happens in future of the fictional world and of course the other three movies all had the main concept... an ultra right wing nationalist government trying to disenfranchise minorities and the lower income, people taking offense may need to re-evaluate their own political affiliation before they rate a movie a 1 star.
